: Mahatma Gandhi's famous leather sandals and wire-framed circular rimmed glasses are among a number of his rare personal effects which will be auctioned in New York next month. Other items include a silver Zenith pocket watch, which he gifted to his grandniece Abha, and a bowl and a plate. All belong to an unnamed private collector who is selling them in one lot with letters of authenticity. Michelle Halpern of the New York-based Antiquorum auction house, which is handling the sale, said the items were of a "truly historic" significance and could fetch a lot more than the estimated floor price of £30,000, especially if they caught the fancy of America's rich Indians. "He [Gandhiji] didn't have much, so anything of his that comes up for sale is worth that much more. He's a hero not just in India but across the world for his peaceful methods and the changes he made," she told The Times. Gandhiji gave the glasses to a colonel in the British Indian army, H.A. Shiri Diwan Nawab, who asked him for inspiration. "Gandhi gave him the glasses and said: 'These gave me the vision to free India.' They were passed down through the colonel's family and we have a letter of provenance from his grandson. The sandals were given to a British military officer in 1931 prior to the Round Table talks in London," Ms. Halpern said. The officer had taken some photographs of Gandhiji and he gave him his sandals out of gratitude. They were passed down through the officer's family. The watch, bowl and plate came from Abha Gandhi's. She was the Mahatma's assistant for six years and was with him when he was assassinated in 1948. "The items were put together by a collector who is now selling them and there has already been a great deal of interest. I'm sure the items will sell for more than the estimate," Ms. Halpern said. Two years ago, a rare manuscript of Gandhiji was withdrawn from an auction in London after the Indian government intervened and arranged to acquire it.
