July 1:  Doctor's Day

 

 Doctor's Day is observed on different days in different parts of the world.

 In the USA, 30^th March is designated while in India, it is on the 1^st July.

 

Dr. Crawford W Long conducted a surgery, using anesthesia for the first time on 30^th March 1842. To mark this milestone in the medical history, Doctor's Day is observed on this day in the USA. Red Coronation flower is the logo of this observance. It is believed that this flower symbolizes the affection, compassion, sacrifice, courage and confidence of the doctor towards the  patients.

 

In India, the birthday of the famous physician, legislator and politician of West Bengal Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy is commemorated as Doctor's Day. 

Dr. Roy, born in 1882 in Patna, after completing his medical course in Calcutta, did his  M R C P and F R C S in London and returned to India in 1911. Apart from being a good practitioner, he was also a nationalist and took part in the freedom struggle.  He initiated many medical institutions in different parts of the country. He became the President of the Indian National Congress and later a very popular Chief Minister of West Bengal.  He was awarded the nation's highest award Bharat  Ratna.  An award in his name was also instituted by the Govt.

 

By a strange coincidence, he expired in 1962 on July 1^st, the same as his birthday.   He is fondly remembered for his selfless service and hard work as a doctor even to this day.

 

We should remember that doctors are also human beings behind their white dress and stethoscopes and  they do their best to save any and every patient coming to their care.  Let us   appreciate their dedication to their mission, on this day.
