Dear Friends
I am overwhelmed by the response -largely flattering- that I have received from you. Thank you so much.
I have been asked :what is my nationality. Friends, does it really matter? It should suffice for me to say that I am ahuman being and my avowed religion is humanism.
I have been asked, too, whether I can translate the poem. Here goes my effort.
And chased through mazes of wilderness
For all your life?
Whenever a possibility of putting together a nest surfaces
Everything is burnt down by rain of fire?
If toys were snatched out of your innocent childrens' hands
And they were handed grenades instead?
Their delicate-as-
Onto ways full of thorns?
Having friends of whom expecting nothing but wounds
And with neighbours who constantly avoid you
Not even offering night-long shelter
And be expert informers?
Is it at all possible that in this atmosphere
And inspite of disappointments all round
You could keep intact your courage,
Your resolve, enthusiasm, zest?
And keep them intact just for a moment?
If anyone says "yes" to answer these questions
He must be, dear friend, a Palestinian
And deserving that we bow our head to him.
My God...this is chilling stuff. For those of you who know Urdu/Hindi, here is a poem I wrote 25 years ago:
Aap ko gar ghar se beghar kar diya jaaye
Aur phir bhatkaav ke sehraaon mein
Zindagi Bhar ke liye haanka kiya jaaye
Jab bhi kuchh tinkay jama karne ki soorat ho
Aag ki baarish mein sab jhulsa diya jaaye?
Aapke maasoom bachchon ko agar
Chheen kar unke khilone bum ke golay de diye jaayein
Phool jaisay narm paaon ko agar
Zindagi bhar ke liye purkhar rastay de diye jaayein?
Doston say sirf zakhmon ki umeed
Aur humsaaye ki bas katraaye jaayein
Raat bhar ko bhi baseraa tak na dein
Mukhbari ke fan mein maahir maane jaayein.
Kya ye mumkin hai ke iss mahaul mein
Har taraf mayoosiyon ke bavajood
Aap apna azm, apni himmatein
Baankpan ya josh ya zindadilee
Ek lamhe ko bhi qaayam rakh sakein?
Inn savaalon ke jawaabon mein agar
Koi "haan" keh de to ussko jaane-man
Bas filisteeni samajhna chaahiye
Usske aagay sar jhukana chaahiye.
This was published, perhaps in 1985, and very widely appreciated. I have also recited this nazm in several Mushairas, as well as to eminent poets such as Kaifi Azmi and Fehmida Riaz.
Let us all pray for peace in Palestine.
